However, learning how to do the auto body painting of your car accurately would give you greater control of choosing the right design for your car, and it will save you a considerable amount of money as well.

Things Needed to Paint Your Car

  • Paint sprayer
  • Paint urethane base
  • Masking tape: A type of tape use in protecting some areas when painting.
  • Sponge
  • Wax or grease removal
  • Putty
  • Car painting clear coat
  • Covering material or preferably tarpaulin
  • Acrylic lacquer clear cloth
  • Urethane clear cloth kit

Wash the Car

It is very important to wash your car before beginning the process; this will remove all dirt, mud, dust and other particles from the car and allow the paint to adhere properly. Wash the car with clean cloth and dry thoroughly.

Sanding Down of the Rough

After washing the car, the next step is to sand down the rough areas on the car and this is done with the help of a sandpaper. It is advisable to use loose and fine grit sand paper for tough regions and also make use of putty to fill the holes and dips on some areas before proceeding to the next step. If the holes and dips are not properly filled, it will definitely affect the painting. So, it’s important to sand down the entire rough region on the car.

Covering the Areas not to be painted

At this stage you have to protect all parts you don’t want to paint on with tarpaulin and masking tape. For instance, wheel cover, windows, mirrors and other areas.

Prime the Entire Part of the Car

Once you are ready, apply the same amount of primer to all parts of the car, which are to be painted. Primer is an important material as it helps paint to adhere properly. After the applying the primer, allow it to dry for a while. Once the primer is dried, you will have to sand down the car surface again to make it smooth.

Painting

Now is the time to spray your car paint to the car. Apply the urethane based paint and the spray gun, to spray the base coat of the paint over the entire surface slickly. Let it dry for approximately 15-20 minutes. After 20 minutes apply the fine coat evenly over the surface allow it to dry for about 90 minutes.

Finalize the Painting

Finally you need to apply the clear coat of paint over the surface of the car. Give a space of 15 to 20 minutes after every coat. Repeat the process three times and leave the surface to dry for 90 minutes after the third coat. Remove all masking tape and tarpaulin while the clear coat is still wet, and be sure not to get any paper or masking tape stuck on the wet paint. Let the clear coat dry for the recommended time. Check out the completed job for imperfection or runs. If there is any, sand back affected region with 2000-grit wet-and-dry sandpaper and re-spray. You are through with your paint job.
